Things to Do in Turlock This August 2026

August 6, 2026

For years, the shorthand explanation for a Turlock weekend was simple: drive to Modesto if you wanted a national chain, stay in town if you wanted a local one. August 2026 is the month that shorthand stops working. The first Chick-fil-A in all of Stanislaus County opens on West Tuolumne Road, a Bay Area gyro chain is staffing up on West Monte Vista, and the calendar at the fairgrounds and downtown is packed enough that the "nothing to do here" complaint has finally run out of runway. The interesting question is no longer whether Turlock is getting bigger. It is which parts of the new Turlock are worth your Saturday.

Here is a working map of the month, organized by the decision you are actually making: where to eat this week, which weekend to block out, and which Thursday night is worth leaving the house for.

The August 6 Opening That Ends a County-Wide Drought

Chick-fil-A is opening its first location in Turlock, named Chick-fil-A Countryside & Tuolumne, on Thursday, August 6. The store sits at 2630 W. Tuolumne Road and welcomes its first guests at 6:30 a.m. That address matters. It puts the drive-thru squarely inside the Countryside/Tuolumne retail cluster that already anchors the west-side commute, which is going to change traffic patterns on that corner in ways every resident within a mile is about to feel.

Two facts worth holding onto before you go:

  • The restaurant is the chain's first location in both Turlock and Stanislaus County. If you have been driving to Modesto or Manteca for it, that trip is done.
  • To celebrate the opening, the store is running a "Moove-In Party" where guests in cow-themed costumes may get a free entrée or kid's meal while supplies last.

The local operator is Christine Murphy, who began her Chick-fil-A career in 2021 at a restaurant near Manteca and grew up about 20 minutes from Turlock. That is worth flagging because the operator model at this chain is franchise-adjacent but community-tethered, which usually shows up in local school and youth-sports sponsorships within the first year.

Nick the Greek, and Why West Monte Vista Is the Corridor to Watch

The Chick-fil-A story is the headline. The Nick the Greek story is the trend.

The chain's planned Turlock location is at 2870 W. Monte Vista Ave., placing it in one of Turlock's busiest commercial corridors near Monte Vista Crossings and the California State University, Stanislaus campus. The company has not announced an opening date, but hiring is underway with applications available online. If you want to gauge how close it is, the hiring page is the tell. Staffing typically fills two to three months ahead of a soft open in this format.

Context helps here. Nick the Greek opened its Ceres restaurant in December 2024 at 4213 Mitchell Road in the Ceres Gateway Center, and that store is the first Nick the Greek in California with a drive-through lane. New restaurants are also planned near the Pelandale Avenue Costco in Modesto, in Turlock, and in additional cities including Manteca and Stockton. Read that list the way a broker reads a retail rent roll: the chain is treating the Highway 99 corridor as a single market and Turlock as a required stop, not an optional one.

The West Monte Vista/Countryside/Tuolumne triangle is where that reads on the ground. Between the incoming gyro drive-through, the new Chick-fil-A, and the recent arrivals of Burlington, Dave's Hot Chicken, Miniso, and Nations, the west side of Turlock is where roughly the last eighteen months of retail growth has landed. If you have not driven Monte Vista at 5:30 p.m. recently, do it once this month before Chick-fil-A opens. The baseline is about to change.

Your August Weekends, in a Table

Most of the month's larger events are clustered at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds & Event Center, with a downtown outlier. If you are picking one weekend to invite out-of-town family, this is the shortlist.

Date Event Where Start
Sat, Aug 15 C10s Under The Lights Stanislaus County Fairgrounds & Event Center 3:00 p.m.
Fri, Aug 21 Gilmore Girls Summer Soirée 138 S Center St, Downtown Turlock 5:00 p.m.
Sat, Aug 22 Stanislaus Summer Rave Stanislaus County Fairgrounds & Event Center 2:00 p.m.

Sources: C10s Under The Lights runs Saturday, August 15 from 3:00 p.m. at Stanislaus County Fairgrounds & Event Center, and the Stanislaus Summer Rave runs Saturday, August 22 from 2:00 p.m. at the same venue. The Gilmore Girls Summer Soirée is scheduled for Friday, August 21 from 5:00 p.m. at 138 S Center St.

The pattern here is worth pointing out. Two of the three biggest August draws are at the fairgrounds, which continues to function as Turlock's default large-event venue in a way most Central Valley cities cannot match without renting a park. The downtown soirée on Center Street is the counterweight: smaller footprint, walkable, and the kind of event that keeps the ground floor of the historic core relevant.

Thursday Nights Have a Default Answer Now

If the fairgrounds owns the weekends, Thursday belongs to Dust Bowl.

The Dust Bowl Brewing Co. Brewery Taproom at 3000 Fulkerth Rd hosts live music in the beer garden on Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The reason to flag it is not that live music is unusual in a taproom. The reason is that a recurring, same-night, same-venue slot is what turns a bar into a habit, and Turlock has not had a lot of those. If you are the household member responsible for the "what should we do tonight" question, Thursday just answered itself for the rest of the summer.

The Openings Sitting on Your Existing Route

Before the west-side attention pulls everything toward Tuolumne and Monte Vista, it is worth cataloguing what has quietly landed elsewhere in town over the last year.

  • Dave's Hot Chicken was one of the recent arrivals to draw immediate lines from families and students, per local reporting that grouped it alongside Burlington, Miniso, and Nations as the most recent Turlock openings, with Dave's specifically drawing early excitement from students and parents.
  • Ling Nam, per Yelp's Turlock listings, recently opened in the former Mr. Kebabs space with a similar small dine-in footprint of about five tables.
  • Burlington, Miniso, and Nations round out the recent retail and quick-serve arrivals in the same window.

The interpretive point: three years ago, a Turlock resident with visiting family had a coherent excuse to drive to Modesto for the "we have more options" argument. That excuse is now noticeably thinner. Residents no longer have to drive to nearby cities like Modesto to shop or eat for a widening slice of use cases, and the retail leasing pattern suggests the trend accelerates before it plateaus.

What This Month Actually Tells You About Turlock

Zoom out. A single new drive-thru is a data point. Chick-fil-A choosing Turlock as its first Stanislaus County location, in the same month a Bay Area chain is staffing up a mile away, is a pattern. Retail follows rooftops and traffic counts, not press releases. National operators are underwriting the west-side corridor because the numbers on the ground finally justify the buildout, and the fairgrounds calendar and downtown Friday events suggest local demand is showing up to match.

For a household that already lives here, the practical takeaway is smaller and more useful than any of that: your Thursday is Dust Bowl, your mid-August Saturday is C10s at the fairgrounds, your late-August Friday is Center Street, and your August 6 morning coffee run just got a new option on Tuolumne. Save the Modesto drive for something Modesto actually does better.

If you are watching this shift because you own a home on the west side, are thinking about a move-up within Turlock, or you own retail-adjacent land in the Monte Vista/Countryside corridor and want a read on where values are heading, that is the conversation we have every day.
